Prof. Dr. Esra Erdal from Dokuz Eylül University (DEÜ) Faculty of Medicine, Department of Basic Medical Sciences, Department of Medical Biology, has developed the culture conditions of organ-like structures called organoids from stem cells in the laboratory environment. Licensing and commercialization activities of the model, called eHEPO, have also started for use in drug efficacy and safety tests in liver diseases. Prof. Dr. Esra Erdal applied to TÜBİTAK’s 1702 – Patent-Based Technology Transfer Support Call with the Organo-ID company she established within DEPARK for the study, in which Dokuz Eylül University (DEÜ), Izmir Biomedicine and Genome Center (IBG) and Koç University are also stakeholders. DEU Rector and DEPARK Chairman Prof. Dr. Nükhet Hotar thanked the scientists who contributed to the study and stated that the scientists operating within Dokuz Eylül University have carried out pioneering studies in health as in many fields. DEU Rector Hotar said, “Our scientists play an important role in the field of health and in the fight against diseases. Prof. Dr. Esra Erdal and her teammates will contribute to the discovery of new treatments and new drugs with their work and play a pioneering role in protecting human health.
